Important information about the scope and limitations of our screening service.

1. Screening service — not medical diagnosis

ADHD Brain Scan UK provides an objective brain screening service. We do not diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any medical condition including ADHD. Our qEEG brain screening measures electrical brain activity and compares it against published normative data. The results are designed as supplementary evidence to support — not replace — a comprehensive clinical assessment by a qualified healthcare professional.

A formal ADHD diagnosis in the UK requires assessment by a qualified clinician (psychiatrist, clinical psychologist, or specialist ADHD practitioner) and must include clinical interview, validated behavioural rating scales (e.g. Conners, SNAP-IV, DIVA-5), developmental and educational history, assessment of comorbid conditions, and consideration of differential diagnoses.

Our screening provides one data point — the theta/beta ratio and associated EEG metrics — within what should be a broader clinical picture. No decisions regarding medication, educational provision, workplace adjustments, or any other intervention should be made on the basis of our screening alone.

2. FDA reference disclaimer

Our screening protocol is based on the theta/beta ratio (TBR) biomarker, which was referenced in the FDA clearance of the Neuropsychiatric EEG-Based Assessment Aid (NEBA) System under De Novo classification K112711 in July 2013. The NEBA System was cleared as a diagnostic aid for ADHD in patients aged 6-17, to be used alongside standard clinical evaluation.

We reference this FDA clearance to provide scientific context for the validity of the TBR biomarker. Our service is not FDA-cleared, FDA-approved, or in any way affiliated with the NEBA System, NEBA Health LLC, or its manufacturers. The FDA clearance applies solely to the NEBA device as manufactured and distributed by its original manufacturer.

3. Equipment disclaimer

The EEG device used in our screenings is a research-grade consumer electroencephalography device. It is not classified as a medical device under the UK Medical Devices Regulations 2002 (SI 2002/618). Our service operates in the same regulatory category as other UK-based neurofeedback clinics, brain mapping services, and quantitative EEG providers.

We are not registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) as our screening service does not constitute a regulated activity under the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014.

4. Normative data disclaimer

Our normative database is compiled from published peer-reviewed research sources and open-access EEG datasets. The primary sources are:

These norms are derived from published research populations and may not be perfectly representative of all demographics, ethnicities, or clinical presentations. Normative data is provided as a reference for comparison purposes and should be interpreted in clinical context by a qualified professional.

Our computed norms from the Mendeley dataset are based on 311 subjects (168 controls, 143 ADHD). While this is a meaningful sample size, it is smaller than some clinical normative databases. We are transparent about this and cite our sources in every report.

5. Limitations of the theta/beta ratio

While the theta/beta ratio is the most extensively studied EEG biomarker for ADHD, it has known limitations:

These limitations are precisely why our screening is positioned as supplementary evidence — valuable when combined with clinical evaluation, but not sufficient in isolation.

6. Accuracy statement

The American Academy of Neurology (AAN) published a practice advisory in 2016 stating that TBR-based EEG assessment combined with clinical evaluation achieves accuracy of 89-94%. As a standalone measure, published sensitivity is approximately 58% and specificity approximately 74%.

We cite these figures for transparency. We do not claim that our screening is 89-94% accurate on its own. That figure applies to TBR used in conjunction with a full clinical evaluation. Our screening provides the TBR data; your clinician provides the clinical evaluation. Together, they achieve the higher accuracy.

7. Clinical interpretation letters

The clinical interpretation letters provided with our Comprehensive ADHD Assessment package represent our professional interpretation of the screening data. They are not medical reports, psychiatric evaluations, or formal diagnostic documents. They are designed to assist qualified clinicians in their own assessment by providing a structured summary of objective EEG data with normative context.

Recommendations made in clinical letters (e.g. "further assessment may be warranted") are suggestions based on the data pattern and should be evaluated by the receiving clinician in the context of their own clinical judgement and the full clinical picture.

8. Reviews and testimonials

Client reviews and testimonials displayed on our website represent the individual experiences and opinions of those clients. Individual results may vary. Reviews are selected to represent a range of experiences and outcomes. The presence of positive reviews does not guarantee that any individual will have the same experience or outcome.

Where reviews reference specific clinical outcomes (e.g. "my GP fast-tracked a referral"), these reflect that individual's experience with their own healthcare provider. We cannot guarantee how any GP, psychiatrist, school, employer, or other third party will respond to our screening reports.

9. Children and vulnerable individuals

For clients under 18, a parent or legal guardian must provide informed consent and be present throughout the screening. We take particular care to ensure that screening results involving children are communicated sensitively and in context.

If at any point during the screening process we believe that a client (adult or child) is in distress or that the screening is not in their best interest, we reserve the right to discontinue the session. A refund or rescheduling will be offered in accordance with our Terms of Service.

10. No emergency service

ADHD Brain Scan UK is a screening service, not a crisis or emergency mental health service. If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health emergency, please contact:

11. Website content

The information on this website is provided for general informational purposes. While we make every effort to ensure accuracy, we do not warrant that all information is complete, current, or error-free. Scientific understanding of ADHD and EEG biomarkers continues to evolve, and information presented here reflects our understanding as of the date of publication.

12. Professional indemnity

ADHD Brain Scan UK holds professional liability insurance appropriate for the services we provide. Details of our insurance cover are available upon request. Our liability is limited as set out in our Terms of Service.

13. Regulatory position

For clarity: Our service is a brain wellness screening using quantitative EEG technology. We operate in the same regulatory framework as established UK neurofeedback clinics, brain mapping services, and qEEG providers. This type of service does not currently require CQC registration, medical device certification, or prescribing authority under UK law. If the regulatory position changes, we will update our practices accordingly.
